Origin of the Word "Mambí"

"Mambi is a word, of forms substantivas and adjetivas, applied al Cuban separatist against Spain, especially al that fought in weapons by the cessation of the colonial period and the advenimiento of the national independence.  Mambí is a word africanoide, concretely bantú, built on a root, mbí, that has numerous meanings despectivas.  The Spaniards began to using it in Holy Sunday, against the Dominicans that itself were not submitted to its government when took place the reanexión of that territory of Quisqueya to the crown of Spain, there well halfway through the century XIX, as desperate transitory formula with which some they thought that very serious events would be avoided whose renewal was feared because of the national turmoils and interquisqueyanas, of racial and political character.  Mambí meant rebel, bandit, criminal, rebellious, infamous, bad, the same thing there by the Congo and African lands ultracongoleñas that by the rebellious sabanas and mountain ranges of the old Spanish Island.  The soldiers that evacuated to Holy Sunday, al to resumed this town antillano their history of sovereignty, they came to Cuba and al to scramble with the insurgent one Cuban they called it also mambí.  This denomination despectiva passed to be apelativo honorable, as occurred in other historic occasions (the sans culottes of France, the gueux of Belgium, the carbunari Italian, etc) in which the elements despised fought with success by their liberties and those of their town.  Has also called piojosos the followers of Gandhi."

"Mambi es un vocablo, de formas substantivas y adjetivas, aplicado al cubano separatista contra España, especialmente al que luchaba en armas por la cesación del coloniaje y el advenimiento de la independencia nacional. Mambí es una palabra africanoide, concretamente bantú, construida sobre una raíz, mbí, que tiene numerosas acepciones despectivas. Los españoles comenzaron a usarla en Santo Domingo, contra los dominicanos que no se sometieron a su gobierno cuando tuvo lugar la reanexión de aquel territorio de Quisqueya a la corona de España, allá bien mediado el siglo XIX, como desesperada fórmula transitoria con que algunos pensaron que se evitarían muy graves sucesos cuya renovación era temida con motivo de las turbulencias nacionales e interquisqueyanas, de carácter político y racial. Mambí quería decir insurrecto, bandido, criminal, revoltoso, infame, malo, lo mismo allá por el Congo y tierras africanas ultracongoleñas que por las levantiscas sabanas y serranías de la antigua Isla Española. Los militares que evacuaron a Santo Domingo, al reanudar este pueblo antillano su historia de soberanía, vinieron a Cuba y al bregar con el insurgente cubano lo llamaron también mambí. Esta denominación despectiva pasó a ser apelativo honroso, como ocurrió en otras ocasiones históricas (los sans culottes de Francia, los gueux de Bélgica, los carbunari italiano, etc) en que los elementos despreciados lucharon con éxito por sus libertades y las de su pueblo. También se le ha llamado piojosos a los seguidores de Gandhi."
